In law school I never thought I’d be able to do the things I wanted or see the places I loved until I was well in my way to retirement.
—
The truth is, we were raised in a law school environment that taught us this was the Truth. But friends I have a little secret— they were wrong.
—
Never before in history has it been easier to travel or work where you want. What’s stopping you?
I poured the hot water into my mug and carelessly ripped open a tea bag, plunking it into the mug. “This is going to be a long night,” I thought.
—
Luckily, I was wrong. Thanks to a VC-backed startup I consult for, I serendipitously got an email. In it, I learned of a way to find the health insurance I need without spending all my patience in the process.
—
Tonight I’m paying that forward to YOU. I’ve shared how to find the health coverage you need, which for me, isn’t just about premiums and deductibles but real life health too.
—
Check it out at RuckusLegal.com/blog before it’s too late! (FYI... this Friday is the deadline to get your coverage!)
What if you lawyers out there post something and later regret it? What if you get made FUN of?
—
This was an interesting question posed to me this morning as I spoke to a group of about 50 attorneys about how to ethically use social media. And guess what?!? I messed up something in the presentation!!
—
I said to be careful with using the terms, “specialist” or “expert” in relation to your legal practice, and we had an ethics professor in the audience who called me out and said while other jurisdictions may care about this, Georgia does not.
—
Whoops! I still think it’s great advice, and it was admittedly a little sloppy on my part during an ethics presentation. But the other 98% of content was out there, helping attorneys and hopefully improving their lives.
—
So get out there, post imperfectly. Be you. And if you make mistakes, who cares? It proves you’re human.

Kicking back after my best launch ever. I can’t help it, I’m a marketer first and a lawyer second. This launch was not for my law firm, though I’ll be experimenting with that soon and reporting back to my newsletter list soon with the results. Make sure you’re on it by clicking the link in my bio.

As solos and small firms, it’s essential to treat our firms as entrepreneurial ventures rather than old school firms. The firms that don’t can laugh now, and stay stuck in the 1980s. The internet exists, people have choices now. No one finds their lawyer on the back of the bus without Yelping them first. Who cares if you say you “booked” a client vs. “engaged” a client. Semantics are far less important than client happiness.
—
Law firms aren’t exactly known as client-service extraordinaire, but the service based businesses I represent are AMAZING at treating their clients well. I want to be like THOSE businesses, not more of the same. #sorrynotsorry
Double tap my face if you wish you could work with clients from anywhere!

This crazy journey I’m on started nearly 5 years ago. When I graduated from law school in 2013, I was devastated with a series of health problems. Forced to find a new, less stressful career path, I picked “teaching yoga” out of desperation.
—
About a year in, I was even more stressed out than before and now out of money. Add to that the devastating news that my best friend from law school died at 27, and I was at my breaking point.
—
During these years, behind the scenes, I was blogging, learning calligraphy and found myself increasingly involved with friends in the wedding industry.
—
It was at a small gathering of friends that I got the idea for @thecontractshop, which is the peanut butter to my law firm. —
Working for myself, under the guidance of a 12th year attorney, I was able to build a successful law firm and online business selling contract templates to entrepreneurs.

If you are curious about the specifics, I break it down in the free Blueprint I give you in my profile, or go to http://bit.ly/RuckusPlan
I'm not immune to fear, but I don't let it control my approach to clients, my firm or my life.
------------------------
I'd be lying if I said I never got jealous or felt that twinge of envy when someone did something cool, got something done, or accomplished something I wanted to do. The difference between 'good enough' and fantastic lawyers is that fantastic lawyers shrug this stuff off and keep going and 'good enough' lawyers get stuck in it.

One of my favorite projects was creating this online course with @ifimade. To date, I've created or consulted on over 10 online courses.
--------------------------------
Part of what allows me to travel and earn income from anywhere is turning my services into products-- a concept that's sure to leave many shrugging, saying, "I can't do that," or, "that worked for her but it won't work for me because [insert excuse here]."
-------------------
One of the things I'd like to do with Ruckus is teach attorneys how to turn their practice into a product. Admittedly, I still have clients, I still do legal work, but I am not killing my self for every engagement letter because my icons is so diverse. Real job security does exist and it's not in the corporate world- it's in streams of revenue YOU create + control.
Who's life was affected this week by the major @delta disaster? 🙋🏽 grab a coffee and I'll clink to that ☕️
